NEW SECTION: SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

From now on, RCHN offers the authors this new contribution format for submitting short research articles on relevant biological topics. These articles will have a traditional scientific structure (Introduction - Methods - Results - Discussion), and their description is as follows:

Short Communications are brief but complete articles presenting limited investigations with relevant results. As a special case, RCHN may consider reports or findings of natural history of high significance for the readership, documented in quantitative and rigorous form. Whatever the case, the presented information must be original and independent (preliminary or complementary results are not acceptable). Short Communications should not exceed 10 manuscript pages including Tables, Figures and Literature Cited.

Complete electronic collection of RCHN

In the "Contents" section you will find the complete electronic collection of RCHN*, with free access to all published articles (pdf) since 1987 to date. The collection is only available at this web site.

* The inclusion of the historical material (1897-1969) of the journal was possible thanks to the support of CONICYT-Chile (grant FP 0949, Fund of Publication of Chilean Scientific Journals).

General Information

General Information and Policy

Revista Chilena de Historia Natural (RChHN) is a bilingual (Spanish and English) open access journal, published by the Sociedad de Biología de Chile (Biology Society of Chile) in printed and electronic versions. Publication in RChHN is open to any person, regardless of membership status or any other distinction.

RChHN welcomes contributions presenting original results as well as essays/reviews stimulating criticism and synthesis, which may be submitted under different manuscript formats. Reception of manuscripts is continuous, and authors are allowed to choose between single- and double-blind review processes.

RChHN gives priority to basic science, although applied contributions may be considered if they provide important or novel scientific approaches. Purely descriptive studies may be acceptable only if they are directly related to key biological issues or more comprehensive theoretical frames.

Structure and Thematic Scope

RChHN offers seven categories of contributions: Research Articles, Review Articles, Commentaries, Forum and Replies, Letters to the Editor, Book Reviews, and thematic Special Features (mini-reviews, simposia, and others; see Information for authors).

RChHN publishes original research dealing with past and present phenomena from organismic to higher levels of biological organization, considering both empirical and theoretical studies on all kinds of taxa and environments. The major areas covered by RChHN are: botany and zoology; physiological and behavioral ecology; population biology; community and ecosystem ecology; systematics, biogeography and evolution.

Periodicity, Indexing and Publication costs

RChHN publishes one volume per year and four quarterly issues per volume (March, June, September and December). The volume corresponding to 2011 is 84.

RChHN is indexed in Science Citation Index (since 1985), Science Citation Index Expanded, Scopus, SciELO, Current Contents (Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences), Biological Abstracts, Current Advances in Ecological Sciences, Wildlife Review, Fisheries Abstracts, Aquatic Sciences, and Zoological Records. The current indices of Revista Chilena de Historia Natural are: 5-year impact factor = 1.080; 2010 impact factor = 0.723; immediacy index = 0.341; cited half-life = 9.8.
